Generative AI is not a single tool you bolt onto finance. It is a capability you point at specific, repetitive, high-judgement workflows. The first skill of an AI-augmented FP&A operator (محلل التخطيط المالي) is knowing where to point it. Spread it everywhere and you get a pile of half-finished experiments. Aim it at the three or four workflows that eat your month, and you reclaim days.

The high-value FP&A workflows

Across the function, four workflows return value fastest: variance commentary (explaining why actuals missed budget), forecasting and re-forecasting, board and management reporting narrative, and scenario analysis. These share a profile: structured numbers in, written judgement out, repeated every cycle. That is exactly the shape a large language model handles well. Tasks that are pure calculation (a SUM, a consolidation) belong in Excel or your ERP, not in a prompt. Tasks that need a written, reasoned, comparative answer belong to AI with you reviewing.

How to run the diagnostic

  1. List every recurring FP&A task you touched last month and the hours each took.
  2. Tag each as calculation, judgement-writing, data-wrangling, or decision.
  3. Rank the judgement-writing and data-wrangling tasks by hours times frequency.
  4. Your top three are your AI pilot candidates. Everything else waits.

Use this prompt to pressure-test your shortlist with any chat assistant (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini):

You are an FP&A transformation advisor. Here is my list of monthly finance tasks with hours and a tag (calculation / judgement-writing / data-wrangling / decision):
[paste your list]

Rank the top 3 candidates for a GenAI pilot. For each, state: expected hours saved per month, the main accuracy risk, and one control I must keep so the output stays audit-ready under IFRS reporting.

Notice the last clause. We never ask AI to act unsupervised on numbers that hit a financial statement. The pilot saves time; the human keeps sign-off.

Try it

Write out your real task list for last month with hours. Run the prompt above. Save the three workflows it surfaces, you will rebuild each one as a working pipeline across this course. Note in one sentence why the top task is the right place to start, that sentence is your business case in miniature.
